Own one clear idea. Who is it for, what is it for, and why should someone choose you? If you can't explain your product in a few words, your marketing is off.
Most companies treat brand and performance as two budgets, two teams and two stories. That split is the most expensive mistake in marketing. Performance Branding is the method I've used for 25 years to build brands people love, use, and share, and to make them pay for themselves.
When money gets tight, brand gets cut first because it's hard to measure. Performance gets more expensive every quarter because everyone is bidding on the same audiences. The result is inconsistent growth, weak loyalty and a cost per customer that keeps climbing.
Scale and efficiency also pull against each other. New tactics are efficient but unproven at scale. Proven channels get crowded and expensive. Companies chase one trendy channel after another without a plan that ties them together.
Performance Branding fixes that by running everything as one system, with one story, one plan and one set of numbers.

Words people understand fast and remember. Backed by research, tested, and said the same way everywhere.
Interruptive, compelling and memorable. Good creative is where the rubber meets the road.
The right audience, at the right time, in the right media. Paid, owned and earned working as one plan.
Model to an agreed CPA, CAC and LTV. Report monthly and quarterly. Protect the work that makes people care.
In any media. A memorable idea lowers every cost that comes after it, from CPC to CAC. Creative that doesn't stand out, show the value or connect with people almost guarantees a failed media test, and then the company blames the channel.
Agree on the targets for CPA, CAC and lifetime value, and report against them. Then protect the work no spreadsheet can fully credit: the brand that makes every other number better over time.
Facebook at Manilla. Podcasts at Betterment. Streaming TV. New channels are usually most efficient early, before everyone piles in. Run a real test, with real creative, measured properly.
Viral hits are edge cases. Real brands need a real team, real resources and a plan to pay it back. At HotJobs, Super Bowl ads worked because they were timed to the moment job seekers make New Year's resolutions.
A growing share of buyers now meet your company through an AI answer before they ever see your website. Google and ChatGPT summarize, compare and recommend. You don't write that answer, but you decide what it's built from.
The research points in one direction. The brands that get named are the ones people already talk about, search for by name and trust. That is brand building, and it now pays off in a new place.

Brand mentions across the web were the factor most closely tied to showing up in Google's AI answers, well ahead of backlinks. (Ahrefs, 75,000 brands, 2025)

What you are, who it's for and why someone should choose you. If you don't decide how you're described, the machine decides for you.
Original data, clear numbers, named customers and plain answers to real buyer questions. AI tools reward quotes, statistics and sources.
Press, podcasts, trade sites, reviews and community answers. Honest mentions, said consistently everywhere. Tricks stop working once everyone uses them.
